Store Report : Goose Barnacle

September 17, 2011

After several months of peering through the closed window of Goose Barnacle, I finally made my way over to the south Brooklyn menswear shop during business hours.  The shop carries everything you’d need from the top down featuring labels such as Norse Projects, Crate, Strong Boalt, Persol and more.

On top of stocking a respectable list of offerings, owner David Alperin, has also maintained the integrity of his family’s past, starting with the name – a Galician crustacean popular among his distant relatives. The phone booth that occupies the center of the room was formerly housed across the street in his Grandmother’s bar, Long Island Bar (1948-2007), a popular haunt amongst sailors who used to visit the area.  As a 4th generation Atlantic Avenue native, he’s no stranger to the neighborhood and has kept close to his roots.

This kind of attention to detail and neighborhood loyalty is rare, and something I respect.  As a person who appreciates the story behind things, Goose Barnacle strikes all the right notes.  Check them out for yourself at 91 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn.
