Memphis Belle

November 2, 2010

The B-17F Flying Fortress dominated the skies over Europe during WWII.  These planes helped lead bombing campaigns thanks to their ability to protect themselves as well as survive heavy battle damage without going down.  Of the B-17s, the Memphis Belle is arguably the most recognized.  The plane and her crew were the first to complete 25 combat missions, the magic number that offered a ticket home.

The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress is an incredible documentary that captures the story of the Belle and her crew during their final mission.   Made by the First Motion Picture Unit in 1943, it’s shot in clear 16mm color film, and is filled with perfect commentary, wartime footage and sharp-looking GIs.  After watching this, it’s hard to imagine having to go out on 25 of these missions.  Do yourself a favor and take a look.
