L.L. Bean Signature – Zipper Duffle

August 2, 2010

This fall’s L.L. Bean Signature line (available online today) has made some waves, and for good reason.  One piece in particular caught my eye – the zipper duffle.  Pulled straight from the archives, this duffles reemergence is sure to get some attention – it’s firing on all cylinders, aesthetically as well as functionally.  From L.L. Bean,

“A reproduction of our 1934 Zipper Duffle, this waxed-canvas duffle has rugged suede and oiled leather trim, durable double leather handles, removable shoulder strap, and a sturdy zipper. Lined in cotton canvas.”

I was lucky enough to find an original version of this bag last year at the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, and after some proper abuse, it’s still in heavy rotation.

not a fan of the ll bean sig collection. feels like impotent attempts at reclaiming what they used to be, with pointless tweaks. all they needed to do was go to the archives and bring back patterns and clothes from the late 70s thru late 80s.

and this bag feels like a cheaper version of a filson tin cloth bag.

our concern is that late comers, trying to desperately grab a ticket to the nostalgia party, are going to bring its early death. LL bean and cole han are top of the list of names who worry us.
