Dispatches: Wings of Freedom

September 5, 2009

I’m finally getting around to posting on my visit to the Wings of Freedom tour last Sunday.  Needless to say, these planes were totally legit and completely worth taking the metro north train then riding my bike from White Plains station – a fair trek.

West Chester Airport is very chill and was the perfect environment for the event, with minimal crowds and forested surroundings.  However getting to the airport was a journey in itself.  I originally anticipated a short relaxing ride from the White Plains train station, however I faced no plains at all, rather a lot of hills – several miles worth, with shitty google map directions to boot.

Regardless of my inbound travails and exhaustive trek, I finally arrived and got to enjoy some classic portions of downtown White Plains and several wooded streets along the way.  Once I arrived, I grabbed a fresh burger off the grill and got in the mix.  I couldn’t get enough of these tall ships of the sky (as I call them).  I ended up lingering for several hours, talking to some Vets and climbing aboard each of the bombers.

This visit has definitely opened a whole can of worms, and I foresee a bunch of WWII era posts – not far out of character.  Seeing these planes and watching the Mustang swoop and dive overhead with its engines blazing, I couldn’t help but imagine the times when these planes were a common fixture in the skies.  Check out some shots from the tour, and if you didn’t get a chance to see the Wings of Freedom tour last week, check out the rest of the schedule here.
